Is the Stockholm Card worth the cost? Not always. Here’s how to determine if the card is the right purchase for you.

The credit-card-size Stockholm Card can save you quite a lot of money if your intention is to see as much of Stockholm as you can for the time you’re there. But suppose you’re not intent on seeing as many museums and attractions as possible. Is the Stockholm Card worth it for you?

To answer that question, let’s take a look at the 48-hour Stockholm Card and my article, “Two Perfect Days” in Stockholm. In that article, I recommend a few museums and attractions that any visitor to Stockholm simply must see.

On day one of “Two Perfect Days,” you visit the Vasa Museum (admission, SEK 110) and Skansen (SEK 110).

On day two, you visit Gamla Stan, where you’ll want to step inside the Stockholm Cathedral (SEK 40), Nobel Museum (SEK 70), the Royal Palace (SEK 100), City Hall (SEK 70) and Drottningholm Palace (SEK 80).

If you visit these attractions without the Stockholm Card, you’ll dole out SEK 560. The cost of the 48-hour card is SEK 525, so yes, the Stockholm Card does save you money a bit of money in this case.

Now suppose you’re only in Stockholm for one day. The cost of the 24-hour card is SEK 395. If you see the Vasa Museum, Skansen, the Nobel Museum, Royal Palace and City Hall. Admission to those would cost you SEK 460. So at SEK 395, you save money again.

But remember, the Stockholm Card includes admission to 75 museums and attractions. Plus, you also get to free public transportation, sightseeing by boat on the Historical Canal Tour and much, much more. The free public transportation is a good added value.

So in what instances would the Stockholm Card not be worth the money? If you’re not a museum buff, you really don’t need the card. Or if you’re happy to simply walk Stockholm and absorb its wonderful ambience, you can spend the money you would have spent on the card for a nice, long lunch for two by the water, with a glass of wine.
